High Speed Sortation with Inbound Vision
   Sample Application : Photofinishing Industry

Here we present a High-Speed Sorting  system application with GBI's advanced Tilt Tray Vision Sortation System Technology, as it is used in a Photofinishing Lab.

All GBI's Tilt Tray Sorters will simultaneously sort irregularly shaped products from small lightweight polybags to larger boxes weighing up to 25 lbs.

This GBI Inbound is a High-Speed Sortation System that is designed to automate the last remaining labor intensive area in the wholesale photofinishing processing lab since the advent of the outbound sorter. This revolutionary new Sorter combines laser-scanning technology with sophisticated vision technology to collect data from bar code and human markings appearing on the face of an envelope as well as identifying the profile of the actual contents. The collected data is grouped by product definition and accurately sorted, at a rate of up to 8,000 per hour, to the correct batch bin for processing as defined by the user configurable file. The work is automatically logged in with the product information in the same process greatly reducing startup time.

The Automated Inbound High-Speed Sorting System will

  • Sort incoming work at a rateof up to 8,000 pcs per hour by:
  • Identifying product or requested service from customer markings
  • Identifying product or service by metal content
  • Identifying product shape by looking through bag
  • Read different envelope print layouts.
  • Automatically distributeproduct according to flexible user configurations.
  • Automatically login work
  • Require only two to four employees to operate at full capacity

Productivity

Envelopes are separated using a combination of four methods. Each method complimenting the other and providing a double check as well. These are:

  • A laser scan to read the bar codes and record dealer and envelope number, eliminating the need for a separate login.
  • An optical scan to read customer markings identifying film type and type of work requested.
  • An invisible light scan option to determine bag contents and identify film type.
  • Magnetic detection to separate 35mm.

These scans are then analyzed by the sorter's computer to cross-check and confirm the results in the following fashion:

  • The laser scan identifies the bag configuration from the dealer's bar code, determining where the optical scanner should look for customer markings.
  • The metal scan aids in determining whether it is 35mm or not.
  • The vision-light scan identifies the profile of the enclosed film and matches the result to the magnetic detection and customer's markings.

The envelope's configuration, and sometimes the product type, is identified immediately from the dealer bar code, and distinguishing marks on the bag. The combination of these features allows the sorter to recognize between the different bag types to ascertain where to look for check marks. Each different envelope type is taught to the computer and associated by these characteristics.

2-D Vision (Option) - scanner upgrade used for this application.

The 2-Dimensional code scanner decoder is PfDF compatible. It communicates customer order data to a PfDF server. This upgrade allows the sorter to capture specific order data such as name, address, phone number, e-mail and pertinent order information that will utilize a 2-D Aztec Code with PfDF format to integrate to a host computer system.
